Gustave De Bruyne // Saxofonist
In 1938 Gustave De Bruyne depicts a white phantasy about jazz, the genre in which was used by black people in the early twentieth century to exorcise their traumatic past. As common in his early works, De Bruyne incorporates the influences of the historical avantgarde, Neue Sachlichkeit and magisch realisme. The modernistist motifs look like a wink to the famous 1919 portrait of Roger Avermaete by Jan Cockx from the collection of the Antwerp Museum of Fine Arts.
